Historical Roots & Founding

• The Namesakes: The post honors the memories of Homer J. Rood who served honorably in WWII. He was a Private First Class in the 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division of the United States Army. Tragically, he was declared a casualty on February 29, 1944, during the Anzio Beachhead campaign in Italy. Rood is remembered for his service and sacrifice and he is buried in the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy.

•  A.J. Williams, served honorably during WWII and was killed in action while serving his country overseas. Both men lived in the Jupiter area before losing their lives in WWII. The specific battlefield, military unit, and day of death for A.J. Williams are completely absent from public local histories in Palm Beach County. The Post was organized and founded by men who knew them personally.

• The property originally was donated by the Rood family in the late 1940’s and consisted of approximately five acres. This parcel reached from U.S. Hwy 1 to the Intercoastal Waterway. In 1960 the Post decided to sell off 3.65 acres from the waterline to the rear of the current parcel which sits on 1.25 acres of ground.

• Building the Hall: The post was officially established in 1954. In the winter of 1950–1951, before the hall's construction, members of the legion helped demolish the historic Pennock School building in Jupiter. They salvaged the building's concrete blocks to construct the current Legion Hall on US Highway 1 in Tequesta. The first level was completed in 1955 and in 1968 the second story was added on to the structure.
